Course Overview
In this detailed workshop, taught by leading author and Test Engineer of the Year nominee, Steve Sandler, you will learn how to perform all the necessary measurements to ensure reliable operation of your power systems. By introducing new measurement methods like the non-invasive stability assessment, we show how to measure the performance parameters of power circuits in their working environment. In addition, you will learn about real life measurement challenges and best practices to master them. The course includes an introduction to the correct measurement of all the important power supply parameters.

  • No access to the feedback loop? No problem! By performing non-invasive phase margin measurements, you can determine the stability of any regulator; even those without feedback.
  • Are my Bode plots correct? Not always, but this workshop shows you how to master gain and phase margin testing and how to predict control loop stability.
  • You need more bandwidth than you think! Sometimes instabilities of power supplies arise at frequencies you never planned to look at. By analyzing a simple LDO, we will demonstrate how important bandwidth is and what types of instruments can support your applications.
  • Can PSRR and reverse transfer be measured? Yes, these can be measured and yes, these are important parameters you should look at when working in systems where one supply voltage feeds several DC/DC converters.

Test equipment will be provided for the hands-on portion of the class. Includes:  Oscilloscopes, VNAs, Spectrum Analyzers, EMI and PDN probes, and other support instruments. VRTS3 Boards will also be made available.

Steve Sandler, CEO - Picotest, Chief Engineer - AEi Systems

Mr. Steve Sandler is the CEO of Picotest.com, a company that designs and distributes test equipment for testing Power Integrity. Steve was named a finalist for Test & Measurement World’s Test Engineer of the year two years in a row (2012-2013). Steve is the author of the book “Power Integrity – Measuring, Optimizing and Troubleshooting Power Systems” which is used as the basis for the Test and Measurement workshop. Steve is the also the founder and former CEO of Analytical Engineering, Inc., the   Steve Sandler - Lead Instructor
predecessor of AEi Systems. He has over 30 years experience in the design and analysis of power conversion equipment for military and space applications. In his current position as Chief Engineer of AEi Systems, Steve is responsible for worst case analysis and troubleshooting of satellite & power electronic systems. Mr. Sandler is the author of several books and numerous articles on power supply modeling and simulation including, “Switchmode Power Supply Simulation with PSpice”, and “SPICE Circuit Handbook”. Most recently Steve was named the recipient of the 2015 Jim Williams ACE Contributor of the Year award. Mr. Sandler received his BSEE degree from Pacific Western University.
